Vinyl Siding: Paint it or Replace it?

By John Neubert

One of the most common dilemmas for homeowners is whether to paint or replace their home’s vinyl siding. While the less expensive choice is painting, many homeowners are leery about how painted siding will look, and, whether the paint job will stand the test of time. The fact is that vinyl siding can be successfully painted, but only if the job—whether done by you, the homeowner, or a pro—is done correctly.

First, consider the age of your siding. Did you know that painting actually works best on older vinyl? After about 10 years, the factory finish will have weathered enough for the paint to adhere well.

Since I founded Neubert Painting more than 30 years ago, I have found that proper preparation is essential and shortcuts almost always lead to a bad result. The siding must be power-washed and hand-scrubbed with detergent before you paint, or you risk having your hard work prematurely chip away. A professional, neat finish also requires properly covering (use tarps) and masking off all surfaces you aren’t painting. Protecting your windows, roof, foundation, doors, trim, gutters and other surfaces from overspray is much easier than trying to remove mistakes later on.

You will also need to be careful about what paint you choose and understand that your color palate will be somewhat limited. This is because high-quality “vinyl safe” paints from better manufacturers like Sherwin-Williams are offered only in lighter colors. Why? Darker colors are more prone to warping under the summer sun. Having seen countless of good and bad paint jobs, I can assure you that skimping on materials is never a good idea. A premium paint is well worth the extra cost. Bargain products are truly more prone to fading and chipping. Moreover, if the paint does fail, the cost of the repair will be high, and often the only remedy is complete replacement of the siding.

The right tools for the job are essential. For a professional and durable finish, vinyl siding should be painted only with an airless paint sprayer, not brushes or rollers. Also, two coats are needed to ensure a professional and long-lasting look.

Finally, keep an eye on the weather! Not only do you need a dry day, you also need to consider temperature. The ideal temperature for painting is between 50 and 90. Below 50, the wet paint may run. Above 90, it may dry too quickly, leaving a “splotchy” finish.

Is painting your vinyl-sided house easy? No, but with thorough preparation, the right tools and careful execution, a good paint job can bring new life to your home.

Why Does Neubert Painting Do a Charity Project?

Our charity project is a reflection of my own
values as the owner of Neubert Painting. My
values went through a major change 10 years
ago when I was diagnosed with testicular
cancer. Surviving cancer often forces you to
reflect on what is important in life and what
values we want to instill in the younger
generation. The value of our charity project
cannot be measured in dollars. It can be
measured in the fabulous feeling of helping
those in need. Cynics may look at our project
as a means to provide positive publicity for
our company. They have the right to have this view and we certainly welcome positive publicity.
However, the reason we do our charity projects
is more personal and has everything to do with
a personal need to give back. We do our projects because we value how important our service
to others is. I believe that we have an obligation to give back to people who are less fortunate. We
truly are a company run by young people
dedicated to serving others.

Wow, what an incredible artist, and what a great couple he and his wife Pauline are. When we spoke with him about our project, he enthusiastically volunteered his services as well. William is an accomplished watercolorist, and he did an incredible job painting The Providence House, winner of our 2nd Giveaway. On Tuesday, August 2nd, The Providence House in Ohio City got painted twice! Once by Neubert Painting, and once by William Mannion!

Chuck Yarborough - A Great volunteer!

Chuck Yarborough is a great volunteer. We contacted Chuck in May 2009 to ask if he would paint with us on our 2009 Charity Paint Giveaway. He writes an article about dirty jobs in The Cleveland Plain Dealer. He E-Mailed us back to say that he was interested. We were thrilled. We are proud of our charity work and hoped it would give us a little publicity.

We contacted Chuck again in July and told him that we would be painting Providence house on August 5th. Providence House is a crisis nursery in Ohio city. He confirmed that he would be there. On the morning of August 5th, Chuck arrived early to help. The cynic in me thought that Chuck would work for an hour, take a few pictures and leave. That was not the case. Chuck worked hard all day. He painted rails, siding and even worked on an aerial lift doing dormers. He was a hardworker and genuine nice guy to be around.

Chuck wrote a fantastic article about how this project connected him with his father. You can read his article and look at pictures by googling Neubert Painting. We also have pictures and videos of our project on our web site.

He sent back an E-mail to us after the project was completed. Chuck loved working with us and offered to do it again. No newspaper article this time.

We are going to iinvite Chuck back again next year. We hope that he can work with us one more time. No newspaper article is needed. That is not why we do charity work. Thanks Chuck! By: John Neubert 10-23-09

Oil-Base Paints Removed from market January 1st, 2009

Oil-base paints have been removed from the Ohio market effective January 1st, 2009. They are being phased out due to the solvents in these products. Here are the facts:

∙ Oil-base paint products sold in stores must be manufactured before January 1st, 2009. There is some limited inventory still available.

∙ Oil-base paint manufactured prior to January 1st, 2009 may legally be used for the next 3 years.

∙Quarts of oil-base paint will available for at least the next 3 years for touch-ups(expect to pay $20-25 per quart).

The removal of these products will not affect you adversely for exterior painting. The quality of exterior water-base painting products is excellent. The problem lies with interior trim enamels. Oil-base enamels still outlast and outperform water-base trim paints.

We have prepared for this by buying 350 gallons of Sherwin-Williams Pro-Classic satin Interior oil/Alkyd enamel. We hope this will be enough supply to tide us over for the next 3 years. In the meantime, we will be evaluating the water-base replacement products.

Neubert Painting Partners with Sts. Cyril and Methodius

Neubert Painting has partnered with Sts. Cyril and Methodius, a Parish within our community. As part of our desire to give back to the community, we have committed to help maintain the interior of this school, which has helped low-income families receive a quality education for years.

This past August, we were able to serve them again, painting and beautifying their campus, as we have many times in the past.

We feel it’s so important for those of us who have been given so much to give back to others. We are thankful for the ability to bless those in need.
